MA’s Foods now Fair Trade

MA’s Foods, one of Sri Lanka’s top meal solutions providers, has recently completed the certification process and obtained Fair Trade Certification by Flo Cert to support their ethical trading and employee framework.

Fair Trade implies a trading partnership which contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, producers and workers.

‘MA’s was established over 25 years ago and was built and developed based on the values of fair trade- many years before the movement was formalised. As a leading firm in the Sri Lankan food processing industry, we are extremely proud to have achieved external certification to confirm our company’s adherence to the high ethical values it was founded on.” says Maliek De Alwis, CEO. ‘One of the intents of fair trade is to deliberately work with marginalized producers and workers in order to help them move from a position of vulnerability to security and economic self-sufficiency. We believe our work in regional Sri Lanka achieves just that.’

MA’s has guided and supported a small-scale farmer network from around the country which will result in the farmer group also obtaining independent Fair Trade certification. By the end of 2013 MA’s will be able to offer a range of fully fair trade certified products to the world which will in return empower some of the poorest farmers in Sri Lanka.

FLO Cert is the leading International Social Certification Body, working in over 70 countries around the world and is the approved certification body for fair Trade International. Their Fairtrade Certification system monitors compliance with Fairtrade Standards governing the production, buying and selling of a product to the point where it is consumer packaged and labelled. Fair trade is an alternative approach to conventional trade based on a partnership between producers and traders, businesses and consumers. The international Fairtrade system – made up of Fairtrade International and its member organizations – represents the world’s largest and most recognized fair trade system.
